The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
