New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
