Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
